My Diary: June
And Things I Love
Hi love, I’m Sarah Powell, a writer, podcaster and host. I have three preschoolers. I’m tired and powered by tea and cheese on toast. I love capers and eyelash tints. I have started doing daily meditation and sorry to say it’s changed my life. I like small shops, tea cosies and staying in. I want massive hair. I love jumpsuits and facials. I can’t be bothered to use body lotion, absolutely cannot parallel park and can only make one cake (a very flat Victoria sponge) It’s lovely to have you.
Monday
Someone at work told Jon if you put your socks in the freezer then wear them to bed you’ll keep cool all night. I said I felt funny putting them next to green beans and mini milks, what if they smell of onions? He said you can put them in a bag. Went to Next for a click and collect. Staggered by the amount of highland cattle themed items there were. Mugs, plates, placemats, a kitchen roll holder etc can there be that much demand for it? How many people love a highland cow enough to have one on a bread bin?
Tuesday
Giving up manicures for the summer. Reds for autumn and winter. Bright reds, dark reds, sparkly reds for Christmas. Then Tipex white for spring. But not red in the summer, makes me feel hotter. And it all peels off, withering away in the sun like the rest of me. Instead am doing a naked nail. A clean girl nail. A ‘soap’ nail. I don’t love it. But saving a fortune. Chicken sausage orzo for dinner.
Wednesday
Sali Hughes says if you want volume in your hair you should sleep with it tied at the top of your head like a pineapple. She’s one of the best examples of an adult so I did it. Worked well I think. Went to Lidl where Elliot was scared of an actual pineapple.
Thursday
Introduced the babies to fudge. It’s now all they want to eat. Tried the frozen socks. They were just socks that felt a bit cold. Wore them to bed, in 29 degree heat. Woke up after 20 minutes and took them off. Told Jon the socks had done nothing, if anything they’d made me hotter. He said they needed to be wet socks before being frozen, which makes sense.
Friday
The Met Office have launched a new app. Heard on the radio people were upset it wasn’t as accurate as it could be. One woman called in to say her husband was a roofer and had missed a whole day’s work because the app said it would rain and then it didn’t. The man from the met office said he was sorry to hear that and weather could be very hard to predict. Louis cried after dinner for more ‘smudge.’
Saturday
Miss Izzy is moving to Stevenage so won’t be teaching ballet anymore. Nancy gave her a Disney keying with a letter ‘I’ and The Little Mermaid wrapped around it. One of the mermaid’s eyes was slightly wonky. Could be why they were selling it on Vinted. Jon went to the tip. I put things to go in a washing basket to take them out to the car. Jon thought the washing basket was also to go to the tip so threw it away as well. Can see how it happened but am now a washing basket down.
Sunday
10AM reformer pilates. Saw Lynn from the flower shop on the way. She said there is a certain squat that you can do and if you get it completely right you only have to do one. Met a couple to plan their wedding ceremony and completely avoided having to do any parallel parking. Went outside to get the washing in before bed and slipped on a slug. Managed to keep my balance and didn’t drop a single thing but terrible for the slug.
Red Co-Ord from Tu Red is my colour for 2026. I can’t stop seeing/ wearing it so had to buy this. It’s surprisingly thick.
Only Curls This haircare system is so good we did an entire podcast episode about it.
M&S Jelly Shoes I wasn’t sure but actually they’ve been great.
Exercise books I’ve been doing morning pages for 3 weeks and it’s changing my life. An old school (literally) A4 lined pad is a joy.
Imperial Leather A right royal lather.
answr exfoliating drop I need to talk about this more. It’s an exfoliating stone that rubs all the hairs off your legs so you don’t have to shave or wax them.
Leopard print Hush dress she’s very pricey but she’s very gorgeous.
Trout Better than salmon and cheaper.
Lena Nail Polish I bought Pink Before You Speak.
M&S Waterproof Short Parka Ordered this when it couldn’t stop raining a few weeks ago. The lady in M&S stopped me to ask where it was from.
Tickets for Well Well Well 2, my brand new one woman show, are on sale now.
Halloumi & Mango Chutney Curry Anything with halloumi is a good choice.
Lots of love and speak soon,

I have a pair of ice pack socks that have saved my perimenopausal behind on many an occasion. They’re literally socks with squishy ice packs in them. So they stay cold and don’t make your sheets wet.
Absolutely lovely to read. I particularly liked the tale of the "skipped" washing basket. Oops 😂 xx
